How Many Steps a Day Do You Need to Lose Weight?
Find out why there's no single daily step target that works for everyone.
Step tracking
From daily errands to planned walks, Mova helps you see your walking activity and work toward a personal daily step goal.

Everyday movement
A trip to the shops. A little time outside. A walk after dinner. Follow your daily step activity alongside your recorded walking sessions.
Today shows one total for the day: the steps your phone counted and the walks you did with Mova, together with your distance, walking time and an estimate of active calories.

App screens show example data.
Daily goals
See your step goal and today’s progress at a glance. Mova recommends a daily goal from your answers and your recent walking, and you can choose your own.
Not just workouts: steps from Apple Health or Health Connect and Mova walks both count.
A new goal applies from today. Past days keep the goal they had.
Your daily goals add up to a monthly total, so one quiet day doesn’t define your month.

How tracking works
Mova doesn’t run its own all-day step counter. It reads the steps and walking distance your phone already records, with your permission:
Allow Mova to read Steps and Distance when you connect. You can change this any time in the Health app.
Allow Mova to read steps and distance in Health Connect. You can change this any time in its settings.
When you finish a walk in Mova, it can be saved to Apple Health or Health Connect. Mova asks about that separately.
Counts depend on your phone, your health app and when it last updated, so totals can differ from other apps. Location is used only during a walk you start, if you allow it.

There’s no single number that suits everyone. Our guide explains what the research on daily steps shows, and how to choose a goal you can build on.
Read the guideYes, once you connect Apple Health on iPhone or Health Connect on Android. Mova reads the steps and walking distance your phone records through the day and adds the walks you record in Mova.
You can still record walks in Mova, and they count. Your everyday steps from the rest of the day just won’t appear, and Mova tells you so rather than showing zero. You can connect later.
Steps are estimates. Apps and devices can count differently, and the day’s total can change as your phone catches up. Mova uses what Apple Health or Health Connect has recorded, plus the walks you record in Mova.
No. Mova is built to recognise when a walk you recorded in Mova also appears in Apple Health or Health Connect, and counts it once.
No. Mova uses your location only during a walk you start, and only if you allow it. Everyday steps come from your phone’s health app, not from location.
Yes. Mova recommends a goal based on your answers and recent walking, and you can set your own instead. A new goal applies from today; past days keep the goal they had.
