How distance, walking time and calories are worked out

Distance comes from Apple Health or Health Connect for the whole day, and from GPS for a walk. Walking time and active calories are Mova's own estimates from your steps and the weight in your profile.

Distance

Where Source
Today and Progress (a whole day) The distance in Apple Health or Health Connect. It may include running or other activities.
A walk you record outdoors GPS during the walk.
A treadmill walk The distance you add from the console, if you add it.
Indoor and chair workouts No distance.

Your daily goal is always about steps, not distance.

Walking time

For a whole day, walking time is Mova’s estimate: the minutes in which Health recorded a walking rhythm (at least 60 steps in a minute). For a walk you record, it’s the walk’s active time, without pauses.

Active calories

Calories in Mova are estimates, shown with ≈ or est. Mova doesn’t read calories from Apple Health or Health Connect. It works them out from how briskly you walked (your steps per minute) and the current weight in your profile, using standard energy values for walking. They’re active calories: the energy of the walking itself, not what your body uses at rest.

  • Without a weight in your profile, or without step data for a walk (for example with Motion & Fitness / Physical activity off), Mova can’t estimate calories.
  • Because the estimate uses your weight, keep it up to date in Profile & settings › Personal details.
  • A watch that measures heart rate will show a different number. Use Mova’s figure as a rough guide.
  • Monthly views don’t add calories up.

Kilometres or miles

Go to Profile & settings › Units & preferences and choose Kilometres or Miles for distance and speed, and kg · cm or lb · ft-in for body measurements. Mova starts with the units usual in your phone’s region. In Progress, distances under 1 km show in metres (for example 850 m).
