Start a walk, and the permissions Mova asks for

Tap Start on Today or in the Plan, check the workout screen, and tap Start walk. Before your first walk Mova explains the permissions it will ask for; you can walk without any of them.

Steps for iPhone and AndroidUpdated 2 min read

1. Open the workout

  • Today’s planned walk: on Today, tap the button under today’s session, for example Start Japanese Walking. Or in Plan, tap Start workout.
  • Any other workout: find it in Workouts and tap it.
  • Free Walk: see Free Walk.

The workout screen shows the length, place and effort, then the Structure (warm-up, phases, cool-down) and the effort for each part, for example Brisk — you can talk, but not sing. A planned walk says Today’s session · from your Plan. Treadmill workouts show Suggested settings; indoor and chair workouts show What you’ll do and Before you start.

2. Check “Ready to go”

Under the structure, Ready to go shows what Mova will record:

  • Route (outdoor walks): Location ready · Your route will be recorded, or that your route is off and why.
  • Audio cues: on or off, with a switch (not for indoor and chair workouts).
  • Health: whether the walk will also be saved to Apple Health or Health Connect.

3. Tap Start walk

For indoor and chair workouts the button says Start workout. Mova goes straight to the walk screen; there’s no countdown.

If a walk is already running, Start takes you back to it. If an interrupted walk is waiting, Start opens it first so you can resume, save or discard it (see If a walk was interrupted).

Before your first walk: permissions

Before a walk, if your phone still needs to ask for permissions, Mova shows Before your first walk and explains what it will ask for. You can walk either way. Tap Continue to see your phone’s own questions, or Not now to start without them.

Permission What it’s for Without it
Location (outdoor walks only) Records your route and measures distance and pace. Mova asks only while you use the app, never all the time. You can still record a walk without a route. Time and steps still count.
Motion & Fitness (iPhone) / Physical activity (Android) Counts your steps during the walk, so your walk summary shows them. Steps aren’t counted for the walk. Time still counts.
Notifications (Android 13 and later) Shows your walk on the lock screen: a quiet notification that your walk is in progress, with no health values. The walk still records.

Treadmill and indoor workouts never ask for location.

Change permissions later on iPhone

Open Profile & settings › Privacy & data. The Location, Motion & Fitness and Notifications rows show what’s allowed and open Mova’s page in your iPhone’s Settings. For location, choose While Using the App.

Change permissions later on Android

Open Profile & settings › Privacy & data. The Location, Physical activity and Notifications rows show what’s allowed and open Mova’s page in your phone’s settings. For location, choose Allow only while using the app.

If the walk won’t start

Mova couldn’t start the walk. Try again. Tap Try again. If it keeps happening, close Mova completely and open it again; your plan and other walks are unaffected.

This walk isn’t available means the workout was removed or replaced. Go back and choose another one.
